Introductory Inkle Loom Weaving class in April.

Inkle looms have a simple, two-shed arrangement that produces an over and under tabby weave. Inkle loom type weaving has been around for several centuries, although the modern inkle loom was developed between the 18th and 19th century and imported to the United States in the 1930s from England. The word ‘inkle’ is Old English for a narrow strip, often used as a drawstring or belt. The inkles, or strips, are also used to decorate clothing, as bag handles and headbands, or sewn together to create bags and clothing.

The weaving class will meet on April 21st, 23rd, 29th and May 6th from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Students will learn how to set up an inkle loom for a plain weave structure using a variety of colored cottons that will be supplied, while learning basic weaving terminology and techniques. Students will be able to work outside of class to complete their inkles. Cost for the class and all materials are $65.00 to be paid by the first class. Inkle looms are available to students and may be reserved when registering for class. To register for the Inkle Loom class or for further information, please contact the Kirkman House Museum at 509-529-4373.
